Adult vs. Embryonic Stem Cells

The ICMS supports scientific research. As such, we support the continued evaluation of the clinical applications of all stem cells. As a professional medical association, the ICMS supports adult stem cells as a therapuetic application available to patients today as part of a physician's daily pratice of medicine.

Why does the ICMS Support Adult Stem Cells?

The ICMS is a strong advocate for Adult Stem Cells because there are safe and effective treatments available to patients today. The ICMS stance is based on scientific research: According to the National Library of Medicine, there is nearly a three to one difference in published scientific articles citing adult stem cells versus embryonic stem cells.

Is the ICMS Against Embryonic Stem Cell Research?

No. The ICMS believes in the value of all sound, scientific research. Embryonic stem cells offer great future promise. The ICMS believes that adult stem cells, however, offer real cures today.

Does the ICMS believe that all stem cells and therapies are viable today?

No.  At this time, due to a lack of data and peer reviewed science and medical journals, the ICMS feels that there are certain cell types that are not ready for usage by patients today, such as:

• Induced Pluripotent Cells (IPS), and
• Autologous Adult Stem Cells where genes have been manipulated

The ICMS believes that there should be more data to support patient safety before these cell types are used to treat conditions today.
